Northern Youth Leadership recently hosted the Tarek Leahy Chicot Camp in Kakisa, Northwest Territories—a week-long, land-based cultural camp for 12 youth aged 11–17 from across the NWT. The camp created a safe and supportive space for youth to connect with one another, learn traditional skills, and strengthen their relationship with the land.
Over the week, youth participated in hands-on activities such as checking fish nets, making dry meat, learning about traps, setting rabbit snares, and sewing rabbit fur mitts. Guided by local Knowledge Holders and supported by dedicated staff, youth learned cultural teachings while building confidence and resilience.
Beyond the skills, the camp was filled with laughter, games, and connection—offering time to bond, share stories, and create lasting friendships.
