Leadership Development Program 2026 – Coppermine River Expedition

Northern Youth Leadership is excited to invite youth from across the Northwest Territories to apply for the 2026 Leadership Development Program (LDP) — a multi-day whitewater canoe expedition from the Coppermine River to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, delivered in partnership with Black Feather.

Dates: July 23- August 10, 2026

Location: Coppermine River to Kugluktuk, NU

Who can Apply: Anyone 17-30 from the Northwest Territories

Cost: All program costs are covered by Northern Youth Leadership.

This unique land-based program brings youth together for an immersive wilderness experience where participants paddle alongside experienced guides, mentors, and traditional knowledge holders.

Epic Multi-Day Whitewater Canoe Expedition: Paddle the Coppermine River with experienced guides and mentors.

 

Hands-On Learning & Certifications: Earn Paddle Canada Moving Water Skills and gain experience in navigation, river hydrology, risk management, and wilderness cooking.

Cultural & Community Connection: Learn from traditional knowledge holders and take part in community celebrations in Kugluktuk.

Mentorship & Leadership Development: Be supported while discovering your leadership style and taking an active role in guiding the trip.

Build Community Everywhere You Go: Connect with like-minded youth, practice teamwork, and experience the power of creating “community” on the land.

Life Skills for the Land & Beyond: Develop paddling skills, wilderness confidence, problem-solving, and resilience while connecting deeply with northern landscapes.

We recognize this program is a significant time commitment and that work, school, and other responsibilities can make it challenging to step away for several weeks. If you’re able to make the time, this experience offers an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge yourself on the land.
