About the Program

The Students on Ice Foundation is an internationally recognized organization that offers transformative, place-based learning experiences for youth in the Arctic and Antarctic. Through its programs, SOI connects youth with Elders, scientists, educators, and community leaders, supporting leadership grounded in environmental understanding, cultural knowledge, and global awareness.

Saavittut 2026 is the first time this program is being delivered in Mittimatalik. It brings together youth, community knowledge holders, and partners to learn directly from the land and sea ice, while grounding experiences in Inuit knowledge systems.

We are excited to begin this work in the community and are hopeful to continue community relationships.

Program Highlights

Participants will engage in a range of land-based, cultural, and science-based learning experiences, including:

  • Sea ice and coastal land-based exploration

  • Environmental and ecological monitoring on the land

  • Hands-on sampling and observation of ecosystems using microscopes

  • Learning with Elders through storytelling, language, and cultural teachings

  • Cultural exchange grounded in Inuit knowledge systems

  • Evening reflection and sharing circles focused on leadership, connection, and community
