Northern Youth Leadership recently hosted the Protecting Our Lands Camp—a nine-day canoe trip for youth ages 12–16 along the Deh Cho (Mackenzie River) from Fort Providence to Jean Marie River. This land-based cultural camp created a supportive space for youth to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and deepen their connection to the land and water.
The camp was made possible through the expertise, mentorship, and partnership of NASA, Ducks Unlimited, Michigan Tech Research Institute, Wilfrid Laurier University, Deh Gáh Got'îê First Nation, Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, and Ecology North. Each partner played an essential role in creating a meaningful, empowering, and fun experience on the land.
Throughout the journey, youth developed canoeing and camping skills, learned cultural teachings, and built confidence as they navigated the river together. Beyond the skills, the camp was full of laughter, connection, and teamwork—offering time to bond, share stories, and create lasting friendships.
We are excited to share a detailed summary of the Protecting Our Lands Camp below, highlighting the experiences, reflections, and memories made on this unforgettable trip.
