Northern Youth Leadership’s Protecting Our Lands Camp is a unique, eight-day land-based canoe expedition for youth ages 11–16 from across the Northwest Territories. This camp provides participants with the opportunity to deepen their connection to land, culture, and community while developing essential outdoor skills and engaging in real-world environmental monitoring.
From Deh Gáh Got’îê First Nation (Fort Providence) to Líídlîî Kue First Nation (Fort Simpson), youth will paddle along the Mackenzie River, stopping at culturally and historically significant locations such as Axe Point, Redknife River, Brownings Landing, Trout River, Jean Marie River, and Rabbitskin River. Each night, the group will set up camp and learn about the history, ecology, and significance of the land they travel through.
Camp Leadership and Learning Opportunities:
Led by NYL staff Steph and Goliah, with support from Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Indigenous Guardians, youth will work closely with scientists and researchers throughout the trip.
Environmental Monitoring Activities May Include:
Permafrost Monitoring: Setting and measuring grids to monitor active layer depth and climate impacts
Wildlife & River Observations.
Water Quality & Fish Health: (Pending funding) hands-on water and fish sampling
This experience fosters leadership, environmental stewardship, and cultural knowledge through meaningful, hands-on learning on the land.
All travel and food costs are covered.
